BRIEF INTRODUCTION
This trail takes you through the rich Baganda culture under Buganda Kingdom. Buganda Kingdom is one of the oldest kingdoms in Africa. It’s well documented to have been the most or among the most civilized Kingdoms in Africa. It has a King (Kabaka) on the top and an administrative Unit headed by the Prime Minister (Katikiro). The management of this Kingdom almost resembles that of the United Kingdom only different in the indigenous practices. The kingdom has been ruled by 72 kings since its inception.
The current 72nd King (Kabaka Muwenda Mutebi Ronald II is being recognized worldwide for his efforts to curb on the spread of HIV/AIDS in the region. With over 15 million Baganda, the Kingdom’s native language (Luganda) is the most widely spoken business Local language in Uganda. The kingdom as a thick attachment of the development of Uganda and a great number of cultural sites, make it a great tourism heritage worth a visit while on a trip to Africa.
DAY 1: Buganda Kingdom & Kasubi Tombs
At 8:00 am early in the morning after breakfast, depart from the hotel for Kasubi tombs a world cultural heritage site where four of Buganda’s kings are buried two of whom are associated with the history of the Uganda martyrs.
At around 10:30am, leave Kasubi tombs and proceed to Namirembe cathedral where the remains of Bishop Hanington where burried. Namirembe cathedral is also the seat of church of Uganda or the Anglican Church.
At 12:00am we proceed to Lubaga cathedral, the former palace of Mutesa I who is remembered to have invited the missionaries to Uganda. Lubaga Cathedral has got an archive and Museum tracing the lives of the catholic martyrs and the catholic religion in Uganda. It’s also the home of the catholic archbishop and headquarters of the Catholic Church in Uganda.
At 1:30pm we will embark on a slow drive through Lubaga to the Kabaka’s palace via Kabaka Lake (The biggest manmade lake dug by hand during the reign of king Mwanga). After lunch tour Mengo palace and Bulange, the Buganda’s parliament, thereafter proceed to Old Kampala Mosques. Where time permit, we shall briefly visit the old Kampala church a place where St. Mathias Mulumba was killed from. Mathias is the martyr who suffered most, having cut his limbs three days before his death. Then in the evening we shall return to the hotel for overnight stay.
Day 2: The Uganda Martyrs Experience
In the morning drive to Wamala Tombs thereafter proceed to Kanyange Tombs and before lunch, visit the Bahai temple, the largest Bahai temple in Africa (this is optional.
After lunch, continue to the Namugongo martyr’s shrine (The catholic shrine where St. Charles Lwanga was killed from, this is the place where the national service to remember the martyrs is always organized from on 3rd, June very year). Through Nalya we shall reach where St. Gonzagagonza collapsed from and was beheaded on his way to Namugongo.
At around 3.30pm, we shall go to the Protestants’ shrine in Namugongo, a site where the martyrs were burnt to death. Here we shall be able to see the home of the chief executor (Mukajanga House). If time permits, we shall visit the well that was used by the executors to wash their hands and swords after killing the martyrs. Later in the evening we shall briefly visit BAGALA AYAZE tombs, as we drive back to Kampala and after refreshment and dinner. We will go for Kampala night life Experience.
Day 3: Kampla City Walk, Katereke prisons Ditch and Tanda pits
Early in the morning, drive through Kampala slum sand suburbs (Namugongo, Kibuli, Makindye Katwe etc.) and do a city walk to most important monuments and buildings within the city center. And later drive to Uganda Museum. After proceed through Makerere University (the oldest University in Uganda. Then continue to Nsangi and visit Katereke prisons ditch.
Then Later we shall link to Tanda pits archeological site.
Located around 37 kilometers from Kampala along Masaka road. This culturally famous site contains more than 240 pits with unknown depth. These pits were dug when Walumbe was hiding from his brother Kaikuzi to evade being grabbed and deported back to Heaven after he had started misbehaving and started killing Nambi and Kintu’s children on earth. It’s historically believed that, Walumbe had accompanied his sister Nambi and Kintu (Mukko/brother in Law) when they were coming to Earth to start their marriage. This archeological site is believed to be the source of Walumbe (Death) or Bulamu among others culturally important spirits. On a luck day you will meet a pseudo Christians, Muslims and pagans all praying at the same place as guided by their respective spirits. The place has another part controlled by Maama Nambi spirit also worth a visit. The place has shrines and most of the pits are surrounded with different kinds of spears, shields, calabashes and fireplaces named after different gods.
After wonderful cultural stories at Tanda, we shall drive back to Kampala Using Mityana -Kamala road and we expect to have a cultural experience Dinner.
