Katonga Wildlife Reserve with an area of approximately of 207 Sqkm, was gazetted was gazetted as a game reserve in 1964 and later a wildlife reserve in 1996 after merger of the former Game Department and Uganda National Parks. Located in Kyenjojo and Kamwenge Districts and formerly served as a corridor for migrating wildlife from Western Uganda to Tanzania and Sudan. Its unique geographical location between forests, swamps, grasslands, wooded grasslands, woodlands, riverine woodlands, swamp, riverine grasslands, papyrus, mixed Savannah with acacia or woodland, large portions of permanent or seasonal wetlands and savannah vegetation gives the reserve a diverse ecosystem that favors the existence of a variety of animal species. The Katonga wetland system is interlinked with the Nile system forming an important wetland system for human survival.
It’s a habitant for various mammals such as Waterbucks, Impalas, Zebras, Sitatunga and 50birds including wetland specialists various reptiles, amphibians, and butterflies and other fauna species.
