BRIEF INTRODUCTION

This safari will enable you briefly explore all parts of Uganda in a unique way. Murchison falls N.P (MFNP) is the largest national park in Uganda. The park is also bisected with the longest world river, the Nile and forms the world’s strongest water falls within this park. A boat cruise on the Nile towards the Murchison falls, birding and game drives, makes this park a must visit in Uganda. The Bunyoro and other communities around the park, are worth a cultural experience.  When you take this itinerary, apart from Gorilla and Chimpanzee tracking, you will also visit the birders heaven (Semiliki N.P).

The brief Kampala city tour on the first day, not only takes you through the central attractive buildings with complicated city setting, but also highlights on the famous Martyrs’ trail that ends at the Uganda martyrs shrine at Namugongo/Kiyanja.  On the 3rd day, you will go through the northern part of Uganda which is inhabited with many interesting cultures enroute, until you will reach Pian-Upe Wildlife Reserve (PUWR) in the evening.  Pian Upe W.R is Uganda’s largest wildlife reserve and soon to be upgraded to national park status. The reserve is famous for Cheetahs (fastest land animal), Roan antelopes, ostriches among others. In addition, the surrounding Karamajong cultures make a superb community tour within.

Suggested Schedule of activities

Day 1: Drive to Sipi via Mbale city for a hike to the falls and Coffee tourism.

Early morning, enjoy a brief city tour as you drive through Kampala City.  This drive will take you through the central attractive buildings and the interesting complicated city setting during morning hours. You will proceed to Jinja City for Lunch. Jinja is Uganda’s oldest industrial city but now well known as the Eastern African adventurous Capital.  Briefly you may visit the source of rover Nile and after lunch continue to Sipi falls and coffee tourism in the community.

Day 2: Early morning drive to Pian-Upe for a long day game drive before check in to the lodge.

Day 3: Morning game drive in Pian-Upe N.P and a community visit in the evening.

Day 4: Drive to Kidepo N.P and an evening game drive after lunch.

Day 5: Morning game drive in Kidepo N.P and another game drive or community visit in the evening.

Day 6: After a morning nature walk, drive to Gulu via Kitgum for an overnight stay.

Day 7:  In the Morning proceed to Murchison falls national park. And after checkin and Lunch, go for an evening game drive.

Day 8: Go for a morning game drive and after lunch enjoy a boat cruise to the Murchison falls.

Day 9: After breakfast, visit the top of the falls and thereafter, proceed to Kibale N.P

Day 10: Chimpanzee tracking (Morning) and in the evening, Bigodi Swamp community walk

Day 11: In the morning drive to Semiliki National park after nature walk, and an evening boat ride on Lake Albert. Overnight Stay at Semiliki Safari Lodge or Ntoroko game Lodge

Day 12: In the morning go for game drive and thereafter proceed to Queen Elizabeth N.P. you will have an afternoon boat ride on the Kazinga Channel before check in.

Day 13: After breakfast, go for along morning game drive and after lunch proceed to Ishasha sector. You will have a short game drive as you continue to the Lodge for check in.

Day 14: Morning game drive in Ishasha sector and thereafter, proceed to Bwindi Impenetrable N.P.

Day 15: Gorilla tracking.

Day 16: Morning, drive through and experience the hilly southern art of Uganda and then proceed to Mgahinga National Park. You will be treated with a Batwa cultural Community Experience in the Evening. Dinner and overnight stay in Kisoro.

Day 17: Golden Monkey Tracking

Day 18: In the morning after Breakfast, proceed to L. Mburo N.P. after check in and early dinner, go for a night game drive.

Day 19: Moring nature Walk and then return to Entebbe.

Day 20: afer breakfast, in the morning go for Shoebill Tracking and thereafter return to the Lodge and plan for your next destination

Day 15: Morning Nature walk and thereafter proceed to Kampala and you will have a stopover at the equator.

This is a very rich safari deigned for those willing to spend a longer time on a safari. It can be for 29 days or more, according to your interests. This a skillfully designed itinerary for tourists willing to stay longer and explore Uganda to the dot. It’s mainly the only itinerary which will enable you to appreciate that fact that, Uganda is ‘The pearl of Africa’. For example, it takes you through all Uganda’s vegetation types, climatic types, cultures, and many more experiences which are not even shown in most media platforms. After this trip; authors will be able to write an excellent guide book about Uganda. Film stars will have a lot of movie Ideas, philanthropists will get another version of Uganda, educationist will get more areas of research, and Investors will see a lot of opportunities among others. Literally, this safari enables you to start observing Uganda from another unique Angle.

Brief Itinerary

Day 1: Kampala City Tour: Kampala is the capital City of Uganda. Formerly on 7 hills, also a political and the major commercial city of Uganda you are taken through a guided tour through a loop of interesting points such as Kasubi tombs, Old Kampala, Lubaga Cathedral, Namirembe church, Kabaka’s lake, the city centre, Makerere University, Bahai temple, Namugongo martyrs shrine and in the evening to the National Theatre or any other culture center.

Day 2: Early morning drive to Jinja and branch off to Ssezibwa fall cultural size (optional) then proceed to Griffin falls in Mabira forest before continuing to Jinja: lunch enroute. In the evening visit the source of River Nile.

Day 3: White Water Rafting (Full day experience)

Day 4: Drive to Mbale for a forest nature walk, cave exploration and after lunch walk to the Sipi Falls hike, coffee tourism, Bagisu culture and other communities around the Park at Kapkwai.

Day 5: Early morning drive to Pian-Upe for a game drive and in the evening go for Karamajong culture experience.

Day 6: After early morning game drive, drive to Kotido and in the evening visit Nakapelimoru (the largest village in East Africa) for a detailed Karamojong Experience.

Day 7: Very early in morning drive to the starting point and partly hike Mt. Morungule for a visit to the Ik’s Community. (This is another isolated type of Karamajong group). Thereafter proceed to Kidepo. Overnight stay in either Kaabong or Kidepo.

Day 8: With your lunch box, early morning drive to the park for a long day game drive.  Explore the park to the fullest before check- in at the lodge late evening.

Day 9: After breakfast go for a Nature walk, and thereafter proceed to Gulu City.

Day 10:  In the morning explore Acholi cultural sites/communities and after lunch proceed to Murchison falls National Park via Tangi gate.for an Evening Game Drive before Check in.

Day 11: Murchison Falls National Parks (long morning game drive and after a hot bush lunch, go for boat cruise).

Day 12: After breakfast, drive to the top of the falls, then proceed to Ziwa rhino sanctuary for Rhino Tracking. Dinner and overnight at Amuka Lodge.

Day 13: In the Morning, drive to Kibale via, Masindi, Hoima, Kyenjojo and Fort portal lunch enroute. Dinner and overnight.

Day 14: Morning Chimpanzee Tracking and a swampy walk in the Bigodi community after in the evening.

Drive 15: Semliki National ark. : In the morning drive to Semiliki National Park for a nature walk and Ox-bow lakes, hot springs via Fort Portal. After our packed lunch, drive back to Amabeere Ganyina Mwiru Caves and thereafter proceed to the lodge for overnight stay and dinner in Fort-portal Tourist City.

Day 16:  in the morning drive to Queen Elizabeth N.P. Briefly we shall visit Tooro Kingdom (King Oyo’s place & Karambi Tombs) and Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu cultural sites. Thereafter proceed to Queen Elizabeth and an evening game drive before check in.

Day 17: Early morning game drive and after lunch boat cruise in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 18:  In the morning, visit Lake Katwe, where traditional salt mining still takes place and where time permits, proceed to Maramagambo forest and the Bats cave for a nature walk.  Then proceed to Ishasha the southern part of Queen Elizabeth for the tree climbing lions and a game drive in the evening. Lunch en route,

Day 19: In the morning go for a morning game drive and then after, drive to Bwindi Impenetrable / Mghahinga National Park.

 Day 20: GorillaTracking

Day 21: After Breakfast, in the morning drive Kisoro and Visit the Batwa Community in the evening. Overnight stay in Kisoro.

Day 22:  Golden Monkey Tracking.

Day23:  Drive to L.Bunyonyi for a motorized boat ride to explore Lake Bunyonyi, Punishment Island and Batwa communities within. Overnight stay at Bunyonyi.

Day 24: Early in the morning, drive to Lake Mburo National Park. Enroute we shall visit Igongo Cultural Center and after Lunch proceed to the park. After check-in, go for an evening game drive.  Dinner & Overnight stay in L.Mburo N.P.

Day 25: Early morning go for a nature walk, thereafter proceed to Masaka City for an overnight stay.  

Day26:  Early morning drive to Bigo Bya Mugenyi Historical site and after lunch back route and proceed to Ssese Islands (An archipelago on Lake Victoria).

Day 27: Ssese Island tour.

Day 28: Return to Kampala crossing Lake Victoria using a ship, lunch in Entebbe. Dinner and overnight stay in Entebbe.

Day 29: In the morning, cruise to the Mabamba Island for shoe bill tracking and then after lunch visit the Entebbe botanical gardens. And thereafter, prepare for your next destination.

UGANDA BIRDING TOTAL EXPERIENCE - 46 DAYS

(All National Parks, birding sites, and Shoe Bill Tracking)

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

This is typically for birders. Our major target here is to do birding in all important birding sites of Uganda. With this itinerary, you explore Uganda to the maximum. The 45 days may appear to be many but just imagine exploring both Uganda’s flora and fauna in just less than 2months.(in fact its less). Although here our experienced guide put emphasis on birds, still there is organized time for mammals, reptiles, plants and insects. Unlike with other itineraries, for this particular case, we give 2 safari guides with different specializations (mammals, reptiles, plants and for Birds). We do this to ensure quality service provision so that you get definitely served beyond your expectations. Other activities outside birding like gorilla and chimpanzee tracking make this itinerary very unique for a reason.

Brief Itinerary

Day 1: Pick up and preparations

Pick up from the Entebbe international Airport and night stay. This is for our preparations.

Day 2: Shoebill Tracking

Drive to Nakiwogo for a boat ride to Mabamba Swamp. It’s a newly discovered Ramsar site, a home for the most sought after bird, the shoebill. It’s with in Entebbe and birding is mostly done on canoes in mash channels other bird species include. White winged warbler, papyrus Genolek, yellow backed weaver and other swamp specialties like lesser jacana, African pygmy Goose among others which can be spotted in the sky and down on the marsh. After tracking do extra birding around. Then return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Entebbe city

In the morning and we shall do birding at Entebbe botanical gardens and if possible to Ngamba Island. The gardens host a variety of open country and woodland species and you can spend a pleasant couple of hours enjoying the activity.

Day 4: Kampala City Tour and Birding

Drive to Kampala for a city tour and capital city birding and photography in the evening we shall have a culture dinner experience.

Day 5.  Mabira Forest Birding

This will be a whole day activity in this natural forest with a number of bird’s species, like the Tit Hylia, Black and White casqued horn bill, blue Turacos among others.

Day 6: Mabira forest birding

Day 7: Drive to Jinja city and environs birding. 

Overnight in Jinja

Day 8:  Jinja City tour and drive to Sippi Falls. (Long day birding via Mbale city).

Day 9: Mt. Elgon Birding –Kapkwai

Day 10:  Mt. Elgon birding day 2

Day11: Pian- Upe

Day 12. Pian-Upe

Day 13: Kidepo N.P

Day 14: Kidepo N.p

Day 15: Gulu City (resting and urban birding)

Day 16- Murchison Falls National Park.

After breakfast we shall drive to this Uganda’s largest national park which is characterized with untamed African savannah. It’s bisected by the word longest river, the Nile and this makes it an important birding areas in places surrounding this river at the Nile Delta.  Here we shall spend most of the day traveling while doing birding on the way.

Day 17- Murchison Falls National Park

In the morning we shall take a boat along the Victoria Nile to the delta at Lake Albert for bird species like the shoebill stock, secretary birds, pied king fisher, Abyssinian roller, Ground hornbill, thick knees etc. After lunch in the evening we shall take cruise to the top of the falls to look for white-fronted black chat, white crested Turaco, Grey woodpeckers, Pytillia Chestnut, crowned sparrow among others.

Day 18 -Murchison Falls National Park

We take a game drive on the northern bank of the Victoria, Nile birds expected here are Egyptian plover, Bat Hawk, white crested Turaco, carnine Bee eater, night jars, white Rumped canary, rock among others.

Day 19-Budongo Forest Birding

This will involve an early morning move through the forest escarpment looking for, White headed barbet, Grey headed bush shrike, lesser masked weaver, Madagascar heron and others. In the afternoon while still in this Uganda’s largest and most beautiful forest, we will look for the African dwarf king fisher, African crowned eagle, yellow and grey long bill, chocolate-backed king fisher, Red-tailed ant thrush, Iturbi bat’, among others. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 20- Budongo forest and or Busingiro

This will be a whole day  birding at the Royal Mile Busingiro, the key species include, chocolate backed kingfisher, African dwarf, chestnut fly catcher, yellow-browed Camaroptera,  Cabanis Bunting, brown backed scrub-robin, crested Malimbe, red-headed blue bill, The elusive lemon among others dinner overnight stay.

Day21: Drive to Katonga Wildlife Reserve

In the morning after breakfast, drive to Katonga Wildlife Reserve vai Hoima and Kyenjojo. We shall do a lot of birding stops En route.

Day 22: Katonga Wildlife Reserve

Day 23: Drive to Kibale National Park.

After lunch embark on birding in this gifted forest.

Day 24: Chimpanzee tracking

Day 25. Kibale National Park birding

Very early in the morning for birding in the forest for birds like Grey wringed robin, Blue Shouldered robin chat, Yellow spotted barbet, African pitter, Joyful Greenbul, Grey throated fly catcher, Masked Apail, Tinny sunbird, the list is endless. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 26 -Kibale Forest National Park and Semiliki National ark

Today’s morning is to looking for more interesting birds in the forest and the surrounding area like at Bigodi swamp and after lunch proceed to Semiliki. Dinner and overnight stay

Day 27-Semiliki National Park

This is a whole day birding in the forest, the forest in best known for its most sought after varieties like Congo serpent eagle, Black throated Coucal, Grey throated rail, Nkuringo rail, Long tailed hawk, White, throated blue swallow, Red billed helmet shrike, Black casqued wattled, White thighed horn bill among others. After lunch we shall do the Kirumira trail and later drive back to Fort portal for Overnight stay.

Day 28: Drive to Mt. Rwenzori N.P using Nyakalenjijo gate and birding in the surround areas.

Day 29: Full day of Birding (Nature Walk) sleeping at Roboni Community Camp.

Day 30 -Queen Elizabeth National Park

On this day we shall drive to the second longest National Park in Uganda found in the south for a wonderful one day record of 296 species out of 610 recorded in the park. Which includes King Fishers, Yellow billed stock, and Spur winged plover, Swallows, weavers, Thick knees among others.

Day 31 -Queen Elizabeth National Park day

An early morning drive in the open savannah will be rewarding for savannah specialists, while in the evening, birding along the famous natural Kazinga channel will give you a wonderful experience due to its well-known high diversity of birds like African skimmer, Green backed Heron, Africa hornbill, Africa crake, Water thick knee among others.

Day 32. Maramagambo & Ishasha Sector

Day 33. Bwindi Impenetrable N. P

Today in the morning we shall go for birding to look for more species missing on our checklist. Then after lunch drive to Bwindi I .N.P for Dinner and Overnight stay

Day34: Gorilla Tracking

Day 35: Morning resting day and evening birding (optional)

Day 36: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park (Buhoma).

This home of the endangered mountain gorillas is also known for, Black faced Rufous warbler, Graver’s warbler, Grey Cuckoo, Yellow-eyed black fly catcher, starlings among other interesting species.

Day 37: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park (Ruhiija-Mubwindi swamp)

Birding will take place around Ruhiija and on the 17th day we shall take a 4km trail to Mubwindi swamp sloping from 235cm to 205cm for greater chances of spotting some of the most difficult to find of all rift endemics like, Gravers (African green), Broad bill regal sun bird and Arcer’s robin-chart, other species may be Dwarf honey guide, stripe –breasted tit, Ruwenzori Apalis among others.

Day 38: In the morning drive toMghahinga N.P and do birding after check in.

Day 39: Mghahinga N.P (Full day Birding]

Day 40: Lake Bunyonyi birding and resting day

Day 41: Lake Mburo National Park

Birding in this special park is very interesting in that every part of it is alive with a variety, interest and color. Apart from a good number of mammals, the park has the following bird species, Green backed woodpecker, white-winged warbler, papyrus Gonolek, Yellow-billed ox-pecker, Northern brown throated weaver, Red faced and black colored barbets among others.

 Day 42: Lake Mburo National Park

This will be to rewind up with birding in the jungle. It will involve birding through the park while having a relaxed return trip to the capital.

Day 43: Kalangala Islands.

Drive to Bukakata and aboard a ship or ferry to Kalangala Islands.

Day 44: Expeditious Islands birding session one

Day 45: Expeditious Islands birding session Two

Day 46. In the morning board the ship and proceed to Entebbe for a recap and night life celebrations.
